NALANDA UNIVERSITY
- Nalanda is the world’s first university flourished in India during 3rd century CE. It was founded by Gupta empire and later Pala dynasty helps in further flourishment. It is a world class learning centre students from all over the world tried to be its part but only few succeed. It is 95 kms away from Patna, Bihar.
- It had the biggest buddhist monestary inside and buddha’s statue were on every entrance but the statues have not survived by the time. Fa Hien a chineese scholar studied here and wrote a lot about Nalanda. Nalanda has been excavated after taking clue from the books written by him.
- Nalanda had a campus of 10km * 5km of which 1km is excavated till now. It had 108 hostels with 32 rooms each of which only 10 hostels are excavated. Nalanda prospered for 300 years and later ransacked by Bhaktiyar Khilji of Afghanistan. It is said to be burning for 6 months the scorch marks are still visible today.
- There are many small stupas inside the campus it is said that these stupas has the holy ashes of students and faculty died during the course. Wells of that period are found inside the campus.
- Gautam Buddha has visited and delivered many lectures. It is a spot of religious significance. It has an important place in Indian history as India came to be known by the name of Nalanda later.
- Today the ruins are left only that provides a glimpse of the glorious past India had. It is a legacy of Magadha that has laid the foundation of strong India.
